Mauer is a grotesk with a distinctly Berlin character.
Its name refers to the Berlin Wall—not out of nostalgia for the divided city, but to the energy that grew around it: the meeting of East and West, post-war architecture, protest culture, independent galleries, clubs, street life, and the underground scene.
The typeface feels bold and slightly defiant, yet it never tries to overpower the page. It has a playful individuality, balanced by a strong sense of typographic discipline.
One of Mauer’s defining features is its distinctive rounded forms. They echo the arches of Berlin’s bridges and the sweeping curves of the city’s S-Bahn tracks—subtle details that quietly shape the visual identity of the city. The lowercase ‘a’ deserves special attention. Its shape recalls the German grotesks of the 1920s and ’30s without reproducing them literally. The letter leans ever so slightly to the left, as if deliberately resisting geometric perfection. It is this subtle sense of “imperfection” that gives Mauer its vitality and its own distinctive voice.
Despite its expressive personality, Mauer is remarkably practical. It holds together beautifully in extended text, maintaining a cohesive texture instead of breaking into a collection of eye-catching letterforms. From a distance, the page appears almost neutral—close enough to a familiar Swiss grotesk. Only on closer inspection does Mauer reveal its own voice: restrained, confident, and memorable.
Mauer feels equally at home in posters, branding, and editorial design, while remaining calm enough for documents and everyday typography. It is a typeface that brings together expression and functionality—much like Berlin itself, where a complex history coexists with contemporary urban life.
